The 60-second verdict

Note: Competitor prices on this page were last verified in June 2026 and are shown as recorded on that date — they are not live, and several providers have changed their pricing since. Flysimio prices here are always read live from our catalogue. We re-verify every competitor figure monthly for the destinations covered by our eSIM Price Index; this destination is not in that set yet.

Flysimio sells 5 GB for 30 days in Albania at $9.85 on Vodafone and Telekom Albania. Airalo's cheapest 30-day Albania plan is $98.00, because they sell it as unlimited-only. Our 20 GB plan is $33.00 — a third of Airalo's entry price for ten times the data most travellers actually use.

As with Montenegro, a timing note: Albania peaks in July and August, and the Riviera is genuinely overwhelmed then. September is the best month to go — sea still warm, beaches emptying, prices down.

Note: Airalo prices checked on airalo.com, 9 August 2026. Albania is not in the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home allowances do not apply — the same trap as Montenegro, and it catches people driving the coast road down from Croatia.

Albania's networks

Albania has consolidated to two main operators: Vodafone Albania and One Albania (the merged Telekom Albania and ALBtelecom). Both have solid 4G and expanding 5G along the coast and around Tirana. Coverage has improved sharply in the last few years — the weak spots now are the northern mountains rather than the populated areas.

Coverage by destination

  • Tirana — strong 4G/5G throughout, including Rinas airport.
  • Albanian Riviera (Sarandë, Ksamil, Himarë, Dhërmi) — good in the towns and along the SH8 coast road.
  • Berat and Gjirokastër — solid in both UNESCO old towns.
  • Butrint — usable.
  • Theth and Valbona — patchy. The Theth–Valbona hike loses signal for long stretches; this is the main place to plan offline.
  • Lake Koman ferry — expect gaps for much of the crossing. It is one of the most scenic boat trips in Europe and largely unconnected.
  • The SH20 mountain road to Theth — improved but still remote. Download maps.

If you are driving

Self-driving is the standard way to see Albania, and two things matter more than data. Fuel stations thin out in the north, and the mountain roads — particularly to Theth — are slow going regardless of what your navigation app estimates. Download offline maps for the whole north before you leave Tirana, and do not rely on live traffic data.

How much data do you need?

A week on the Riviera runs 2–3 GB for most travellers. Two weeks including the north and the hiking is around 5 GB. Buy 5 GB at $9.85 unless you are working remotely from Tirana, where 20 GB at $33.00 is still good value.

Setting it up

  1. Buy and install on Wi-Fi before you travel.
  2. If you are crossing in from Montenegro, Greece or Kosovo by road, switch the Albanian line on before the border.
  3. Enable Data Roaming for the travel line only, and turn it off on your home line.
  4. Download offline maps for Theth, Valbona and Lake Koman.
  5. Albania uses the lek (ALL), not the euro, though euros are sometimes accepted on the coast at poor rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Albania?

Flysimio — 5 GB for 30 days is $9.85 on Vodafone and Telekom Albania, against $98.00 for Airalo's cheapest 30-day Albania plan, which is unlimited-only. For nearly every traveller the fixed allowance is the right product.

Does EU roaming work in Albania?

No. Albania is not in the EU, so roam-like-at-home allowances from an EU SIM stop at the border and you pay non-EU roaming rates. This is a common surprise for people driving down the coast from Croatia and Montenegro.

Is there phone signal on the Theth to Valbona hike?

Not reliably. The trail loses signal for long stretches and the Lake Koman ferry has significant gaps too. Download offline maps for the whole northern region before leaving Tirana, and tell your guesthouse your plan.

How much data do I need for Albania?

Around 2–3 GB for a week on the Riviera, or about 5 GB for two weeks including the northern mountains. If you are working remotely from Tirana, 20 GB is $33.00 and still good value.

When is the best time to visit Albania?

September. July and August are peak and the Riviera gets genuinely overwhelmed, while in September the sea is still warm, the beaches empty out and prices fall. The northern Alps hiking season also runs comfortably into early October.
