Malta is one of the most densely networked countries in Europe for its size. GO Mobile and Melita have nationwide 5G covering all three inhabited islands. Valletta's baroque streets and the Upper Barrakka Gardens have excellent 5G. Sliema and St. Julian's have 5G. Gozo island (accessible by ferry from Ċirkewwa) has 4G/5G throughout including Victoria, Xlendi, and Marsalforn. Comino island and the Blue Lagoon have 4G (limited, as it is mostly uninhabited). Mdina silent city and Rabat have 4G. The Malta Grand Prix street circuit area (Valletta waterfront) has 5G. Ferry crossings between Malta and Gozo maintain 4G throughout.

FAQ

Questions about Malta

Does this eSIM cover Gozo Island?

Yes. Gozo has 4G/5G across all populated areas including Victoria (Rabat), Xlendi Bay, Marsalforn, and the ferry terminal at Mġarr. The ferry crossing from Malta also has 4G throughout.

Is there coverage at the Blue Lagoon on Comino?

Yes, though limited. The Blue Lagoon has 4G from GO Mobile. Comino is largely uninhabited so coverage is less dense than Malta or Gozo — good enough for photos and maps.

Is there 5G in Valletta?

Yes. Valletta has city-wide 5G despite being just 0.8 km² in size — the world's smallest national capital with 5G coverage. Sliema, St. Julian's, and Paceville also have 5G.

What plug type does Malta use?

Malta uses Type G (British 3-pin rectangular). This is the same plug as the UK, Ireland, and Hong Kong. US travellers need a Type G adapter.

Can I use this eSIM for scuba diving research and navigation in Malta?

Yes. All major Maltese dive sites (Blue Hole, Cirkewwa, Ċirkewwa reef, Wied iż-Żurrieq) are accessible by road from areas with solid 4G. Your phone can't go underwater, but your surface intervals will be well-connected.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of a physical card, you scan a QR code and your plan installs instantly — no SIM tray needed.

Is my phone eSIM-compatible?

iPhone XS (2018) and newer, most Android flagships from 2020+, and all Samsung Galaxy S21+ devices support eSIM. Check our compatibility page for the full device list.

How do I install the eSIM?

After purchase, we email a QR code. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. The whole process takes under 60 seconds.

Can I keep my regular SIM while using this eSIM?

Yes. Most phones support dual SIM (physical + eSIM). Keep your home number for calls and SMS — use Flysimio for data abroad. You control which SIM handles what in your phone Settings.

Does the eSIM include a hotspot (tethering)?

Yes, all Flysimio plans include mobile hotspot at no extra charge. Share your data connection with laptops, tablets, or other devices freely.

What happens when my data runs out?

You can top up data from your account dashboard at any time. Top-ups are applied instantly — no need to buy a new eSIM or wait.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. We offer a full refund within 7 days of purchase. Contact contact@flysimio.com with your order number.

How long is the eSIM valid for?

You have 6 months from your purchase date to activate the eSIM. Once activated, the plan validity period (e.g., 7 days, 30 days) begins counting down.

Will the eSIM work at the airport when I land?

Yes — as long as you installed the eSIM before your flight, it activates automatically when your phone connects to a local network on landing. No Wi-Fi required for activation.

What if the QR code doesn't scan?

If the QR code won't scan, you can enter the activation code manually — we include both in the email. You can also contact our 24/7 support team and we'll resend or manually provision your eSIM.

The complete guide.

Best eSIM for travel to Malta

Malta is the cheapest European country in the Flysimio catalogue, and it is also one of the best-networked countries in Europe for its size — GO, Epic and Melita between them cover all three inhabited islands with 5G. That combination is unusual: cheap here genuinely does not mean compromised. Plans are prepaid with no contract and no roaming surprises, your QR code arrives by email within seconds, every plan includes free mobile hotspot, and there's a 7-day money-back guarantee. One honest note: Malta is an EU member, so if you're travelling from elsewhere in the EU, check whether your existing roam-like-at-home allowance already covers you before buying anything.

How to set up a Malta eSIM (step by step)

Getting online in Malta takes about two minutes. Confirm your phone supports eSIM — iPhone XS (2018) and newer and most Android flagships from 2020 qualify. Choose your Malta plan on Flysimio and pay with card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay; your QR code arrives by email within seconds. On Wi-Fi before you fly, open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM (iPhone) or Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM (Android) and scan it. When you land at Malta International, switch the Flysimio line on and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. Malta drives on the left and uses Type G plugs, the same as the UK.

How much data do you need in Malta?

Very little. Malta is 316 km² with excellent hotel Wi-Fi, so a full week typically uses 1–2 GB — roughly 300 MB a day for maps, messaging and email. A 3 GB plan covers a fortnight comfortably and costs less than a coffee and a pastizzi. Coverage is not the constraint anywhere: Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian's, Mdina and Rabat are all on 5G, Gozo is covered throughout including Victoria, Xlendi and Marsalforn, the Ċirkewwa ferry crossing keeps signal, and even Comino and the Blue Lagoon are covered. Use the calculator above to size your plan and top up if you run low.

Using a Malta eSIM on iPhone and Android

Flysimio runs as a second line beside your usual SIM, so you keep your home number for calls and texts while your Maltese data flows over the eSIM — standard dual-SIM behaviour on iPhone XS and later and most Android phones from 2018. Set the Flysimio eSIM as your cellular-data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. One practical note for divers: surface coverage is good at all the main entries including Ċirkewwa and Wied iż-Żurrieq, so you can check conditions and share plans from the shore — but nothing works underwater, so agree your dive plan before you get in.

Hotspot, calls, and texts on a Malta data eSIM

Every Flysimio Malta plan includes mobile hotspot at no extra cost and without throttling, so you can tether a laptop or tablet or share with a travel companion. As a data-only eSIM it has no Maltese phone number, but WhatsApp is the default for messaging in Malta, and FaceTime and Google Meet handle calls over data. Your home number stays reachable on your primary SIM. English is an official language alongside Maltese, which removes most of the friction travellers hit elsewhere — you rarely need a local number to sort anything out.

Short Malta trips vs. long stays

For a week-long holiday, the 1 GB / 7-day plan at a little over a dollar is usually enough, and 3 GB covers a fortnight. For a longer stay — Malta has a substantial remote-working and iGaming expat community — a 10 or 20 GB plan is still inexpensive. Because Flysimio gives you six months to activate, you can buy before you leave and validity only starts when your eSIM first connects in Malta. One seasonal note: in July and August the islands are extremely busy and the Blue Lagoon on Comino in particular gets congested, so slow data alongside full signal bars is a load problem rather than a coverage one, and no plan size changes it.
