The 60-second verdict

Malta is the cheapest European country in our catalogue: 5 GB for 30 days costs $6.62 on Vodafone and GO, and a 1 GB / 7-day plan is $1.50. Airalo's cheapest 30-day Malta plan is $69.00 because they sell the islands as unlimited-only. For a week-long holiday the gap is roughly 40×.

Malta is also one of the best-networked countries in Europe for its size — nationwide 5G across all three inhabited islands — so cheap here genuinely does not mean compromised.

Malta's networks

GO, Epic and Melita serve Malta, and between them they cover all three inhabited islands — Malta, Gozo and Comino — with 5G. For a country of 316 km², network choice is close to irrelevant: you are never far from a tower.

Coverage by destination

  • Valletta — excellent 5G through the baroque streets and the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
  • Sliema and St. Julian's — 5G throughout.
  • Mdina and Rabat — well covered.
  • Gozo — 4G/5G across the island including Victoria, Xlendi and Marsalforn. The Ċirkewwa ferry crossing holds signal.
  • Comino and the Blue Lagoon — covered, though it gets congested in summer when the lagoon is packed with day boats.
  • Dive sites — surface coverage is good at the main entries such as Ċirkewwa and Wied iż-Żurrieq. Nothing works underwater, obviously.

A note on summer congestion

Malta's population roughly swells with tourists through July and August, and the Blue Lagoon on Comino in particular becomes extremely crowded. Full signal bars and slow data at the same time is congestion, not coverage, and no plan size fixes it. If you want the lagoon without the crush, go early in the day or visit in the shoulder season.

How much data do you need?

A week in Malta runs 1–2 GB for most travellers, and hotel Wi-Fi is good throughout. At $4.12 for 3 GB there is no reason to buy small — that covers a fortnight comfortably.

Setting it up

  1. Buy and install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
  2. Switch the line on at Malta International and enable Data Roaming for that line only.
  3. Turn Data Roaming off on your home line.
  4. Malta drives on the left and uses Type G plugs, the same as the UK.
  5. If you are ferrying to Gozo or Comino, the crossings hold signal — no need to download anything special.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Malta?

Flysimio — 5 GB for 30 days is $6.62 on Vodafone and GO, the cheapest European country in our catalogue, against $69.00 for Airalo's cheapest 30-day Malta plan, which is unlimited-only.

Does my eSIM work on Gozo and Comino?

Yes. All three inhabited Maltese islands have 4G/5G coverage, including Victoria, Xlendi and Marsalforn on Gozo and the Blue Lagoon on Comino. The Ċirkewwa ferry crossing keeps signal throughout.

Do I need an eSIM for Malta if I am from the EU?

Possibly not. Malta is an EU member, so roam-like-at-home allowances from an EU SIM apply. Check your existing plan first — if it covers you, there is no need to buy anything.

How much data do I need for Malta?

About 1–2 GB for a week. Malta is small with excellent hotel Wi-Fi, so real usage is low. A 3 GB plan at $4.12 covers a fortnight comfortably.

Why is my data slow at the Blue Lagoon in summer?

Congestion, not coverage. Comino gets extremely crowded in July and August and the local cells are heavily loaded, so you can see full bars and still get slow speeds. Going early in the day or in shoulder season avoids it.
