Greenland is expensive for mobile data and no provider escapes it, so the honest framing matters more than the sales pitch. There is one operator, TELE Greenland, serving about 56,000 people across an island three times the size of Texas with no roads between towns. Settlements are linked by satellite and undersea cable rather than terrestrial backhaul, and that capacity is genuinely scarce. Every provider pays those rates, including us. For a week-long trip our 1 GB / 7-day plan is meaningfully cheaper than the unlimited alternatives, but set expectations: you are paying several times mainland-European prices, and that will not change soon.

Getting online in Greenland takes about two minutes, but do it before you leave. Confirm your phone supports eSIM — iPhone XS (2018) and newer and most Android flagships from 2020 qualify. Choose your Greenland plan on Flysimio and pay with card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay; your QR code arrives by email within seconds. Install it on Wi-Fi at home or during your connection in Copenhagen or Reykjavík, since most routes go via one of the two. Switch the line on when you land and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. Greenland sits outside the EU despite the Danish connection, so turn Data Roaming off on your home line.

Less than you'd think, because most of the trip has no coverage to use. A week visiting Nuuk and Ilulissat realistically needs about 1 GB for maps, messaging and the occasional photo upload. Buy small, use hotel and café Wi-Fi in town for anything heavy, and top up only if you genuinely run out — that is the cheapest way to do Greenland. Treat mobile data here as a utility for navigation and messages rather than for streaming or video calls; even the Wi-Fi in Nuuk and Ilulissat is often slower than you're used to.

Flysimio runs as a second line beside your usual SIM, so you keep your home number while your Greenlandic data flows over the eSIM — standard dual-SIM behaviour on iPhone XS and later and most Android phones from 2018. Set it as your cellular-data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. Two Arctic-specific notes that matter more than any setting: cold destroys phone batteries, so carry a power bank and keep both inside your jacket, and never treat a phone as a safety plan. Outside the settlements there is no coverage at all, and guided operators carry satellite communicators for exactly that reason.

Every Flysimio Greenland plan includes mobile hotspot at no extra cost, though on a scarce and expensive connection you'll want to use it sparingly. As a data-only eSIM it has no Greenlandic phone number, but WhatsApp, FaceTime and Google Meet work over data while you're in a settlement, and your home number stays reachable on your primary SIM. Coverage exists in and around towns — Nuuk, Ilulissat, Sisimiut, Qaqortoq, Kangerlussuaq — and disappears between them, including on inter-settlement flights and coastal ferries.

For a typical week seeing Nuuk and the Ilulissat Icefjord, the 1 GB / 7-day plan is the right size and the cheapest sensible option. For a longer stay a 3 GB / 30-day plan covers a month, though at Greenland prices it is worth confirming you'll actually use it. If your trip is only two or three days, an unlimited short-duration plan from another provider may suit you better and we'd rather say so — we do not offer an equivalent.
