Best eSIM for Greenland 2026: Nuuk, Ilulissat & the Ice Sheet

Greenland eSIM · from $15.05See plans

The best eSIM for Greenland in 2026: real Flysimio and Airalo prices on TELE Greenland, an honest look at why data here is so expensive, and coverage notes for Nuuk, Ilulissat and Disko Bay.

The 60-second verdict

Greenland is expensive for mobile data, and no provider escapes it. Flysimio sells 1 GB for 7 days at $15.05 and 3 GB for 30 days at $42.67. Airalo's cheapest option is 3 days unlimited at $24.00, rising to $45.00 for 7 days and $99.00 for 15 — they list no 30-day plan at all.

For a typical week-long trip we are cheaper: $15.05 for our 1 GB / 7-day plan against $45.00 for their 7-day unlimited. But set expectations properly — you are paying several times what you would in mainland Europe, and that will not change soon. Read the next section before you decide how much to buy.

Why Greenland data costs what it does

There is one operator, TELE Greenland, serving 56,000 people spread across an island three times the size of Texas with no road network between towns. Settlements are connected by satellite and undersea cable rather than terrestrial backhaul, and satellite capacity is genuinely scarce and expensive. This is not a markup story — it is what the infrastructure costs.

The practical consequence: treat mobile data in Greenland as a utility for maps and messaging, not for streaming or video calls. Hotel and café Wi-Fi in Nuuk and Ilulissat is the right tool for anything heavy, and even that is often slower than you are used to.

Note: Airalo prices checked on airalo.com, 21 August 2026 — no 30-day Greenland plan was listed. Both providers run on TELE Greenland because it is the only network in the country. If you are on a very short trip and want unlimited, their 3-day plan at $24.00 is a genuinely reasonable option and we do not have an equivalent.

Where coverage actually exists

Greenland's coverage model is unlike anywhere else: towns have it, the space between towns does not, and there is a lot of space between towns.

  • Nuuk — 4G across the capital, including the colonial harbour and the airport.
  • Ilulissat — 4G in town and around the Icefjord UNESCO site, which is the main draw.
  • Sisimiut, Qaqortoq, Kangerlussuaq — 4G in the settlements.
  • Disko Bay boat trips — signal near the towns, gone once you are out among the icebergs.
  • The ice sheet, hiking routes such as the Arctic Circle Trail, and any dog-sled or snowmobile excursion — no coverage at all. None.
  • Flights and coastal ferries between settlements — offline for the duration.
Note: Do not treat a phone as a safety plan in Greenland. Anything outside a settlement is genuine wilderness with Arctic weather, and operators there carry satellite communicators for a reason. Go with a guide, and tell someone your route.

How much data do you need?

Less than you would think, because most of the trip has no coverage to use. A week visiting Nuuk and Ilulissat realistically needs 1 GB for maps, messaging and the occasional upload. Buy the 1 GB / 7-day plan, use hotel Wi-Fi for anything heavy, and top up only if you actually run out.

Setting it up

  1. Buy and install on Wi-Fi before you fly — most routes go via Copenhagen or Reykjavík.
  2. Switch the line on when you land and enable Data Roaming for that line only.
  3. Turn Data Roaming off on your home line. Greenland is not in the EU, so EU allowances do not apply despite the Danish connection.
  4. Download offline maps for every settlement you will visit before you leave Wi-Fi.
  5. Greenland uses the Danish krone and Danish plugs. Cold destroys batteries — carry a power bank and keep it warm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Greenland?

For a week-long trip, Flysimio's 1 GB / 7-day plan at $15.05 beats Airalo's 7-day unlimited at $45.00. For a very short stay their 3-day unlimited at $24.00 is reasonable and we have no equivalent. Both run on TELE Greenland, the country's only network.

Why is mobile data in Greenland so expensive?

One operator serves 56,000 people across an island three times the size of Texas with no roads between towns. Settlements are linked by satellite and undersea cable rather than terrestrial backhaul, and that capacity is scarce and costly. Every provider pays it.

Is there phone signal on the Greenland ice sheet?

No. Coverage exists in and around settlements only. The ice sheet, the Arctic Circle Trail, dog-sled and snowmobile excursions, and boat trips out among the icebergs all have no signal. Guided operators carry satellite communicators for this reason.

Does EU roaming work in Greenland?

No. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark but sits outside the EU, so roam-like-at-home allowances do not apply. Turn Data Roaming off on your home line before you arrive.

How much data do I need for Greenland?

Around 1 GB for a week visiting Nuuk and Ilulissat. Most of a Greenland trip has no coverage to use, so real consumption is low — use hotel Wi-Fi for anything heavy and top up only if you genuinely run out.
