Chișinău

Orange Moldova and Moldtelecom provide 4G/LTE to all major population centres. Chișinău city centre (Stefan cel Mare Boulevard, Central Market) has solid 4G. Cricova underground wine city and Mileștii Mici (the world's largest wine cellar by bottle count) have 4G at their visitor entrance facilities. Orheiul Vechi cave monastery and the hillside village have 4G. The M2 and M1 highways to the Romanian border have 4G. Note: Transnistria (the eastern breakaway region) operates on a separate Russian-backed network and is outside Moldovan carrier coverage. 5G is in limited early rollout in Chișinău.

FAQ

Questions about Moldova

Can I visit the Cricova or Mileștii Mici wine caves?

Yes. Both require advance booking for tours. Cricova and Mileștii Mici are 4G-covered at entrance facilities. The underground galleries themselves may have limited signal inside.

Does this eSIM work in Transnistria?

Transnistria operates independently with Russian-backed networks. Coverage from Moldovan carriers (including your eSIM) may not extend there. Crossing into Transnistria also raises entry and exit complications — check your government's advisory.

What currency does Moldova use?

Moldovan leu (MDL). Euros and USD are not widely accepted outside hotels. Use ATMs in Chișinău for local currency. Card payments are becoming more common in the capital.

Is Moldova in the EU?

Moldova is an EU candidate country (candidate status granted June 2022). It is not yet an EU member and does not use the Euro. EU citizens can enter visa-free.

Is there 5G in Chișinău?

Limited 5G is in early rollout in Chișinău from Orange Moldova. Coverage is primarily in the city centre. Full 5G rollout is expected in coming years.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of a physical card, you scan a QR code and your plan installs instantly — no SIM tray needed.

Is my phone eSIM-compatible?

iPhone XS (2018) and newer, most Android flagships from 2020+, and all Samsung Galaxy S21+ devices support eSIM. Check our compatibility page for the full device list.

How do I install the eSIM?

After purchase, we email a QR code. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. The whole process takes under 60 seconds.

Can I keep my regular SIM while using this eSIM?

Yes. Most phones support dual SIM (physical + eSIM). Keep your home number for calls and SMS — use Flysimio for data abroad. You control which SIM handles what in your phone Settings.

Does the eSIM include a hotspot (tethering)?

Yes, all Flysimio plans include mobile hotspot at no extra charge. Share your data connection with laptops, tablets, or other devices freely.

What happens when my data runs out?

You can top up data from your account dashboard at any time. Top-ups are applied instantly — no need to buy a new eSIM or wait.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. We offer a full refund within 7 days of purchase. Contact contact@flysimio.com with your order number.

How long is the eSIM valid for?

You have 6 months from your purchase date to activate the eSIM. Once activated, the plan validity period (e.g., 7 days, 30 days) begins counting down.

Will the eSIM work at the airport when I land?

Yes — as long as you installed the eSIM before your flight, it activates automatically when your phone connects to a local network on landing. No Wi-Fi required for activation.

What if the QR code doesn't scan?

If the QR code won't scan, you can enter the activation code manually — we include both in the email. You can also contact our 24/7 support team and we'll resend or manually provision your eSIM.

Best eSIM for travel to Moldova

Moldova is one of the cheapest countries in the Flysimio catalogue — a 5 GB, 30-day plan on Orange Moldova costs less than a glass of wine in the country that produces it. Orange has the widest national coverage with 5G in early rollout in central Chișinău and solid 4G across the country and main roads. Plans are prepaid with no contract, your QR code arrives by email within seconds, every plan includes free mobile hotspot, and there's a 7-day money-back guarantee. Moldova is not in the EU, so roam-like-at-home allowances from a European SIM do not apply here — turn Data Roaming off on your home line.

How to set up a Moldova eSIM (step by step)

Getting online in Moldova takes about two minutes. Confirm your phone supports eSIM — iPhone XS (2018) and newer and most Android flagships from 2020 qualify. Choose your Moldova plan on Flysimio and pay with card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay; your QR code arrives by email within seconds. On Wi-Fi before you travel, open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM (iPhone) or Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM (Android) and scan it. Switch the line on at Chișinău airport and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. If you're arriving overland from Romania or Ukraine, switch it on after the border.

How much data do you need in Moldova?

A week in Chișinău and the wine regions runs 2–3 GB for most travellers — roughly 300 MB a day covers maps, messaging and email. Moldovan pricing is low enough that there's little reason to buy small: a 3 GB plan covers a full month. Coverage is good in Chișinău, at Orheiul Vechi's cave monastery, at Soroca fortress and around the Cricova and Milestii Mici wine estates. You will lose signal on the underground cellar tours — Milestii Mici holds the world's largest wine collection and the tunnels run for kilometres — but that's expected and nothing to plan around.

Using a Moldova eSIM on iPhone and Android

Flysimio runs as a second line beside your usual SIM, so you keep your home number for calls and texts while your Moldovan data flows over the eSIM — standard dual-SIM behaviour on iPhone XS and later and most Android phones from 2018. Set the Flysimio eSIM as your cellular-data line and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. One important geographic note: Transnistria, the breakaway region along the Dniester, runs its own network and Moldovan coverage there is unreliable to non-existent. If you're crossing to Tiraspol or Bender, carry offline maps and cash and check current travel advice first.

Hotspot, calls, and texts on a Moldova data eSIM

Every Flysimio Moldova plan includes mobile hotspot at no extra cost and without throttling, so you can tether a laptop or share with a travel companion. As a data-only eSIM it has no Moldovan phone number, but WhatsApp and Viber are both widely used in Moldova, and FaceTime and Google Meet handle calls over data. Your home number stays reachable on your primary SIM. Moldova uses the leu (MDL) and cash still matters outside Chișinău, so a working maps-and-converter setup on arrival is worth more than a local number.

Short Moldova trips vs. long stays

For a few days in Chișinău, the 1 GB / 7-day plan costs about the same as a coffee. For a week or more touring the wine country, Orheiul Vechi and Soroca, a 3 GB plan covers the whole month. Worth knowing: at the time of writing, competing providers list nothing longer than a 10-day Moldova plan, so if you're staying two weeks or more our 30-day options have no direct equivalent. Because Flysimio gives you six months to activate, you can buy before you leave and validity only starts when your eSIM first connects in Moldova.
