Romania's networks
Orange, Vodafone and Digi are the three that matter. Orange and Vodafone have the broadest rural coverage and are the ones travel eSIMs typically use; Digi is the budget domestic favourite and strong in cities. Coverage across Romania is good, including in most of Transylvania — the gaps are mountain passes and forest, not towns.
Winter in Romania: markets and mountains
Romania has become a serious winter destination, and the two draws have different connectivity profiles. The Christmas markets — Bucharest, Sibiu, Brașov, Craiova, Cluj — are all city-centre and have excellent 5G, so nothing to plan around. The mountains are the other story.
- Poiana Brașov and Sinaia — good coverage in the resorts and on the main lifts.
- The Transfăgărășan — spectacular, and closed roughly November to June. Do not plan a winter drive over it. When it is open, expect real coverage gaps at altitude.
- Bucegi and Făgăraș hiking — patchy above the treeline. Download offline maps.
- Bran and Peleș castles — both fine, both busy.
Coverage by destination
- Bucharest — excellent 5G, including the metro and Otopeni airport.
- Brașov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara — strong throughout the old towns.
- Painted monasteries of Bucovina — usable in the villages, thinner between them.
- Danube Delta — genuinely patchy. Boat trips into the channels will lose signal.
- Maramureș — fine in the main villages, weak on the back roads.
How much data do you need?
A week in Bucharest and Transylvania runs 2–4 GB for most travellers, and Wi-Fi is widely available and fast in Romanian cafés and hotels. Buy 5 GB at $6.75 unless you are working remotely, in which case 20 GB at $20.50 is still cheap.
