Hungary's networks
Hungary has three operators: Magyar Telekom, Vodafone and Yettel (formerly Telenor). All three have strong 4G and expanding 5G, and coverage across the country is good — Hungary is flat, small and densely populated, which makes it easy to cover. Flysimio routes through Telenor/Yettel and Vodafone.
Christmas markets and thermal baths
Budapest's Advent markets at Vörösmarty Square and St Stephen's Basilica run from mid-November to early January and are the main reason for the winter demand spike. Both are central with excellent 5G. Two practical notes that matter more than coverage:
- The markets are card-friendly but some smaller stalls prefer forint cash. Hungary is not on the euro.
- At the thermal baths — Széchenyi, Gellért, Rudas — you will be leaving your phone in a locker for hours. Széchenyi is outdoors and open in winter, which is the whole appeal, but plan not to have your phone with you.
- Ruin bars in District VII are busy and loud; expect congested mobile data on weekend nights even with full bars of signal.
Coverage by destination
- Budapest — excellent 5G across both Buda and Pest, including the M1–M4 metro lines and Ferenc Liszt airport.
- Lake Balaton — good around the main towns like Siófok, Balatonfüred and Tihany.
- Eger, Pécs, Debrecen, Szeged — strong throughout.
- Hortobágy and the Puszta — usable but thinner; download offline maps if you are driving.
- Danube Bend (Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom) — fine, easy day trips from Budapest.

A long weekend in Budapest is typically 1–2 GB. A week including Balaton or the wine regions runs 2–4 GB. Buy 5 GB at $8.50 and you will not think about it again.
