Finland's networks
Finland has three operators — Elisa, Telia and DNA — and all three are good by international standards. Finnish network coverage is genuinely excellent, including in Lapland, because the country treats connectivity as infrastructure rather than a city luxury. Elisa is usually rated marginally best in the far north; DNA and Telia are close behind and fine everywhere a traveller goes.
Aurora hunting: what coverage actually means
This is the reason most people visit between November and March, and it is worth being specific. Rovaniemi, Levi, Ylläs, Saariselkä and Ivalo all have solid coverage in and around the resorts. What you should not assume is coverage where the aurora is best — which is deliberately away from light pollution, often on a frozen lake or a forest track twenty minutes out of town.
- Check the aurora forecast before you leave Wi-Fi, not on the ice.
- Download offline maps for the whole region — Finnish forest tracks look identical in the dark.
- Cold destroys phone batteries. At −20 °C a full phone can die in under an hour. Keep it inside your jacket and carry a power bank you also keep warm.
- If you are self-driving to a viewing spot, tell your accommodation where you are going. Coverage is good but not universal, and a flat battery makes it irrelevant.
Coverage by destination
- Helsinki — excellent 5G throughout, including the metro and Vantaa airport.
- Rovaniemi and Santa Claus Village — strong, no issues.
