A physical SIM can be moved to a borrowed handset in ten seconds. An eSIM cannot — it takes a carrier, an internet connection, and sometimes a support ticket. Everything else on this list is a variation of that one trade: you swapped a piece of plastic you controlled for a software profile your carrier controls.

That trade is usually worth it for travel and usually not worth worrying about for a primary line on a modern phone. But the objections people raise are legitimate, not FUD, so here they are in full.

1. If your phone dies, your number is stuck inside it

This is the one that actually bites people. Drop a phone with a physical SIM and you move the SIM into any spare handset and carry on. Drop a phone with an eSIM and the profile is gone with the device — you need your carrier to reissue it, which means account access, ID checks, and often a working internet connection you no longer have. Travellers who have lost a phone abroad describe this as the single worst part of eSIM.

2. Switching phones is a transaction, not a swap

Moving to a new handset means transferring the eSIM profile through the carrier or re-scanning a QR code. Apple and Google have made same-brand transfers fairly painless, and some carriers support one-tap eSIM Transfer — but cross-brand moves, older devices, and smaller carriers still land you in a support queue. HONOR, for example, restricts its eSIM Transfer feature to specific carriers in Europe, Mexico, and a handful of other markets.

3. Plenty of carriers still do not support it — especially prepaid

eSIM support is far from universal, and prepaid is where it thins out fastest. Bell Mobility in Canada, to pick a concrete example, offers eSIM on monthly postpaid plans only — so a visitor wanting a local prepaid Canadian line cannot use it. That pattern repeats across a lot of the world: the cheap local prepaid SIM that travellers historically bought at the airport is often still a physical SIM.

4. Whether your phone has eSIM depends on where it was sold

The same model number can have eSIM in one country and not in another. HONOR states plainly that "depending on the country of origin, eSIM may not be supported even if your device is listed". Oppo, TCL, and Samsung have the same regional split. This makes device compatibility genuinely confusing, and it is why a spec sheet saying "eSIM" is not proof your particular unit has it.

5. Older and budget phones cannot be upgraded to it

eSIM needs a chip soldered in at the factory. No software update adds it. If you have a phone from before roughly 2018, or a budget Android from almost any year, you are simply excluded — and the people most likely to be excluded are the people most likely to want a cheap travel data plan.

6. You need internet to install the thing that gives you internet

This is the chicken-and-egg problem, and it catches first-time users constantly. Installing an eSIM requires a data connection, which you do not have at a foreign airport before your plan is active. The fix is simple — install before you fly, activate on arrival — but nothing warns you, and getting it wrong means hunting for airport Wi-Fi with your bags.

7. QR codes are usually single-use

Delete an eSIM profile to tidy up your settings and that QR code will often not work a second time. Depending on the provider you may need a reissue, and some charge for it. Physical SIMs have no equivalent failure mode — you cannot accidentally delete one.

8. Dual SIM is genuinely confusing, and confusion costs money

Running two lines means choosing which one handles data, which handles calls, and which is the default for each contact. Get it wrong abroad and your home line quietly roams at full price. This is the most common way people end up with a surprise bill despite having bought a travel eSIM — the eSIM worked fine, but the home line was never switched off.

9. Less control, and for some people that is the whole objection

When people ask why others are "against" eSIM, this is usually the real answer. You cannot hand your line to a friend, sell a phone with the plan still in it, or buy a truly anonymous prepaid line the way you could with a physical SIM in many countries. The carrier is now in the loop for actions that used to be yours alone. Whether that bothers you is a values question, not a technical one — but it is a coherent position, not paranoia.

Note: Four of the nine disappear entirely if you install the eSIM at home before you fly and turn off Data Roaming on your primary line. That is genuinely most of the risk, handled in two minutes.

Mostly inertia and bad first experiences rather than any of the above. Physical SIMs work, everyone understands them, and there is no reason for an ordinary phone user to seek out a change. The people who do switch are usually pushed — they buy a US iPhone 14 or later, which has no SIM tray at all, or they travel and discover roaming prices. And the first eSIM install is the hardest one, because that is when the internet chicken-and-egg problem and the dual-SIM settings both hit at once. After that it is unremarkable.

The other side of the ledger

  • No queuing at an airport kiosk or hunting for a SIM shop in a language you do not read.
  • No fiddly tray tool, and no losing your home SIM in a hostel.
  • You can buy and install before you leave, so you land with working data.
  • You can hold several country plans at once and switch between them in Settings.
  • Travel data is dramatically cheaper than roaming — usually a few dollars a week rather than a daily pass.

For a two-week trip, the honest summary is that eSIM is better than roaming on price and better than a local SIM on convenience, and the disadvantages above are mostly one-time setup friction. For your permanent primary line, the lost-phone scenario is the one worth thinking about before you switch.
