The 60-second verdict
Flysimio sells 5 GB for 30 days in Paraguay at $21.00 on Claro. Airalo's cheapest 30-day Paraguay plan is $99.00, because they sell the country as unlimited-only. Our 1 GB / 7-day plan at $4.72 is the cheapest short-trip option of any South American country we cover.
Paraguay is one of the least-visited countries in South America, which has an upside worth knowing: almost nobody writes about connectivity here, and the answer is better than you would expect. Asunción and the eastern corridor are solidly covered.

Paraguay's networks
Tigo and Personal are the two largest operators, with Claro also present. Tigo has the broadest footprint and some limited 5G in Asunción. Flysimio routes through Claro. Coverage follows the population, which in Paraguay means the eastern half of the country — the Chaco to the west is very sparsely inhabited and largely uncovered.
Coverage by destination
- Asunción — 4G across the centre, the Palacio de López waterfront and Calle Palma, with limited 5G. Silvio Pettirossi airport is covered.
- Ciudad del Este — 4G. The tri-border area is well covered on all sides; watch for accidental network switching.
- Jesuit Missions (Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue, UNESCO) — 4G on the access roads and around the sites.
- Encarnación — 4G, including the crossing to Posadas in Argentina.
- Pilar and the southern river towns — 4G.
- The Chaco — 4G for roughly the first 200 km of the Ruta Transchaco west of Asunción, then effectively nothing. The deep Chaco is one of the emptiest places in South America.
If you are going into the Chaco
This is the one part of Paraguay that needs real planning. Beyond the Mennonite colonies at Filadelfia and Loma Plata, the Transchaco runs hundreds of kilometres through dry scrub with almost no settlement, no reliable fuel and no signal. Download offline maps, carry water, and do not treat a phone as a safety plan. For most visitors the Chaco is a deliberate expedition rather than a casual side trip.
The tri-border trap
At Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet within a few kilometres — and Iguazú Falls is on the Argentine and Brazilian sides, not the Paraguayan one. Phones near a border routinely latch onto the strongest tower, which may be in the neighbouring country, and a Paraguay-only plan stops working the moment your phone registers on a Brazilian or Argentine network. If your trip includes the falls, a South America regional plan is the simpler answer.
How much data do you need?
A week in Asunción and the missions runs 2–3 GB for most travellers. Buy 3 GB at $14.25 for a week or 5 GB at $21.00 for longer. If your itinerary crosses into Brazil or Argentina, look at a regional plan instead.
Setting it up
- Buy and install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
- Switch the line on at Silvio Pettirossi and enable Data Roaming for that line only.
- Turn Data Roaming off on your home line.
- Download offline maps for the missions circuit and, if relevant, the Transchaco.
- Paraguay uses the guaraní, and cash still matters outside Asunción and Ciudad del Este.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best eSIM for Paraguay?
Flysimio on Claro — 5 GB for 30 days is $21.00 against $99.00 for Airalo's cheapest 30-day Paraguay plan, which is unlimited-only. The 1 GB / 7-day plan at $4.72 is our cheapest short-trip option anywhere in South America.
Is there mobile coverage in the Paraguayan Chaco?
Only for the first 200 km or so of the Transchaco west of Asunción. Beyond the Mennonite colonies at Filadelfia and Loma Plata there is effectively no signal across hundreds of kilometres of dry scrub. Download offline maps and treat it as an expedition.
Will my Paraguay eSIM work at Iguazú Falls?
No. The falls are on the Argentine and Brazilian sides of the border, and a Paraguay-only plan stops working once your phone registers on a network in either country. Near Ciudad del Este phones frequently latch onto foreign towers, so consider a South America regional plan.
How much data do I need for Paraguay?
About 2–3 GB for a week covering Asunción and the Jesuit missions. A 3 GB plan at $14.25 suits most week-long trips; 5 GB at $21.00 covers a fortnight comfortably.
Is there coverage at the Jesuit Missions?
Yes. Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, have 4G on the access roads and around the ruins, as does nearby Encarnación.
