India's network landscape shifted dramatically when Reliance Jio built out the country's fastest 5G network between 2022 and 2025. Jio now has the widest 5G coverage in India; Airtel is second. For tourists, Airtel is generally the better choice — it has been more stable for eSIM provisioning for foreign visitors, and its 4G coverage is excellent nationwide. Flysimio offers Airtel-routed India eSIMs at the best price we found. India was historically difficult for tourist eSIMs, but the market has opened up significantly.

How much data do you need in India?
Most travelers to India underestimate, then overestimate. For a one- to two-week trip using maps, messaging, ride-hailing, and social media on Wi-Fi at the hotel, 3-5 GB is plenty. If you tether a laptop, stream video on the go, or skip hotel Wi-Fi entirely, step up to 10-20 GB. Because Flysimio plans are valid for up to 6 months and support in-app top-ups, it is safer to start mid-range and top up than to overbuy.

What is the best eSIM for India?
Flysimio on the Airtel network is a reliable India eSIM, but we will not pretend it is the cheapest: checked in August 2026, Nomad also runs on Airtel and prices its India plans well below ours at every size — see the dated price index above. Buy ours for the carrier and the refund policy; buy Nomad if price per gigabyte is your deciding factor. Jio has faster 5G in cities but Airtel is more consistent across diverse destinations.
Can tourists use eSIM in India?
Yes. International eSIM providers (Flysimio, Airalo, Holafly) offer India eSIM plans for tourists that activate automatically. These providers handle the regulatory registration on your behalf — you do not need to visit a store or show a passport to the carrier.
Does eSIM work in Rajasthan?
Yes, on Airtel. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, and the roads between them have 4G LTE on Airtel. Remote desert areas (Thar Desert interior, small villages on the Pakistan border) have reduced signal.
Does eSIM work in Goa?
Yes. Goa has excellent 4G coverage on Airtel throughout North Goa (Baga, Anjuna, Vagator) and South Goa (Palolem, Agonda). Beach areas and town centres are all well covered.
Is Jio better than Airtel for tourists?
Airtel is generally better for tourists. It has more consistent eSIM provisioning for international visitors and excellent nationwide coverage. Jio is faster in major cities with 5G but can be less consistent in smaller towns and rural areas.
Does eSIM work in the Himalayas (Manali, Leh)?
Partially. Airtel covers Manali, Shimla, and the main Leh town. High-altitude passes (Rohtang, Baralacha La, Khardung La) typically have no signal. Download offline maps before entering mountain areas.
