Sudan is a northeastern African nation with more ancient pyramids than Egypt — the Nubian pyramids of Meroe, Nuri, and El-Kurru mark the heartland of the ancient Kushite civilisation. Khartoum sits at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile. Sudan is currently in a severe humanitarian crisis due to ongoing civil war that began in April 2023.

Coverage & connectivity.

**Active conflict notice:** Sudan has been in civil war since April 2023, with fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). All major foreign governments advise against all travel to Sudan. Telecom infrastructure has been severely damaged in many areas, and connectivity is unreliable nationwide. When infrastructure is operational, Zain Sudan and MTN Sudan historically provided 4G LTE coverage in Khartoum, Omdurman, Port Sudan, Wad Madani, Kassala, and the major Northern State towns. **Khartoum tri-city area** — Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum Bahri sit at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile and historically had 4G across the central districts, the Souq Arabi market, and the airport (KRT, currently closed). **Port Sudan** on the Red Sea coast — Sudan's second-largest city and currently the seat of the SAF-aligned government — has the most consistent operational connectivity in the country and is the main entry point for the limited humanitarian access that exists. **Northern State pyramids** — the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Meroe, Nuri, El-Kurru, and Jebel Barkal sit in the Bayuda and Nubian Deserts north of Khartoum. Before the war, these had 4G at visitor areas (Meroe town, Karima for Jebel Barkal); current connectivity is unverified. **Darfur** (western Sudan) — Nyala, El Fasher, El Geneina — has been the focus of intense conflict and large-scale displacement; communications infrastructure is severely degraded. **Eastern Sudan** (Kassala, the Eritrean and Ethiopian border areas) and **Blue Nile state** also have degraded infrastructure. Travelers should not plan tourist itineraries to Sudan in current conditions; this page is maintained for historical reference and for the eventual post-conflict re-opening.

FAQ

Questions about Sudan

Is Sudan safe to visit?

No. Sudan has been in civil war since April 2023, with fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces causing mass displacement, atrocities, and the world's largest humanitarian crisis. All Western governments (UK FCDO, US State Department, EU governments, Canada, Australia) advise against all travel to Sudan. Khartoum and Darfur have experienced intense urban combat. Tourists should not plan trips to Sudan until a sustained ceasefire and rebuilding is in place.

Does Flysimio work in Sudan today?

Connectivity is severely disrupted by the ongoing civil war. Infrastructure damage is widespread, and many regions have intermittent or no service. Where Zain Sudan and MTN towers remain operational, eSIM may still attach — but service is not guaranteed, and Sudan is not a destination Flysimio recommends traveling to under current conditions.

What are the Meroe Pyramids?

The Meroe Pyramids are the royal burial grounds of the Kushite Kingdom (Nubian pharaohs who ruled from roughly 800 BCE to 350 CE). Over 200 pyramids stand at Meroe, Nuri, El-Kurru, and Jebel Barkal — more pyramids than in all of Egypt. The steeper, narrower form distinguishes them from Egyptian pyramids. The Meroe complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 2011) and one of archaeology's great treasures. Pre-war, Meroe was a major Sudanese tourist site.

What is the Nile Confluence in Khartoum?

Khartoum sits at the meeting point of the Blue Nile (originating from Lake Tana in Ethiopia) and the White Nile (originating from Lake Victoria in Uganda/South Sudan). The two rivers — visibly different in colour, especially after rainy seasons — flow side by side before merging into a single Nile that continues north through Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean. The confluence is visible from Tuti Island and from Khartoum's riverside corniche.

What is the Sudanese pound and where can I exchange currency?

The Sudanese pound (SDG) has experienced severe devaluation due to political and economic crises, with the parallel-market rate divergent from the official rate. USD and EUR cash are the practical currencies in current conditions, although foreign banking access is heavily restricted. Currency questions are largely academic given that tourism has effectively ceased.

When did Sudan's tourism close?

Sudanese tourism — never large, but historically focused on the Northern State pyramids and Red Sea diving at Sanganeb — effectively ceased after the April 15, 2023 outbreak of fighting between SAF and RSF in Khartoum. The conflict has displaced over 12 million people internally and externally. Restoration of safe tourism depends on the conflict's resolution and subsequent rebuilding.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of a physical card, you scan a QR code and your plan installs instantly — no SIM tray needed.

Is my phone eSIM-compatible?

iPhone XS (2018) and newer, most Android flagships from 2020+, and all Samsung Galaxy S21+ devices support eSIM. Check our compatibility page for the full device list.

How do I install the eSIM?

After purchase, we email a QR code. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Scan QR Code. On Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. The whole process takes under 60 seconds.

Can I keep my regular SIM while using this eSIM?

Yes. Most phones support dual SIM (physical + eSIM). Keep your home number for calls and SMS — use Flysimio for data abroad. You control which SIM handles what in your phone Settings.

Does the eSIM include a hotspot (tethering)?

Yes, all Flysimio plans include mobile hotspot at no extra charge. Share your data connection with laptops, tablets, or other devices freely.

What happens when my data runs out?

You can top up data from your account dashboard at any time. Top-ups are applied instantly — no need to buy a new eSIM or wait.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. We offer a full refund within 7 days of purchase. Contact contact@flysimio.com with your order number.

How long is the eSIM valid for?

You have 6 months from your purchase date to activate the eSIM. Once activated, the plan validity period (e.g., 7 days, 30 days) begins counting down.

Will the eSIM work at the airport when I land?

Yes — as long as you installed the eSIM before your flight, it activates automatically when your phone connects to a local network on landing. No Wi-Fi required for activation.

What if the QR code doesn't scan?

If the QR code won't scan, you can enter the activation code manually — we include both in the email. You can also contact our 24/7 support team and we'll resend or manually provision your eSIM.
